Guest Post: “Where does our Sense of Morality and Justice Come From?” (Tsouloufis)

Religion (true religion) brings a sense of meaning, purpose, and moral order to our lives and our communities.

Yet if there is no God, where would we get our sense of right and wrong, or our sense of fairness and justice?

If there is no God, and all of us are merely evolved higher animals where only the strong survive (i.e. “survival of the fittest”), then the only basis for ethics and morality is that “might makes right.”

There would be no transcendent law (or Lawgiver) that any of us would be held accountable to.

There would be no moral sense or moral intuition within us, but only amoral instincts protecting and promoting our own survival.

This is why if God does not exist, and there is ultimately no justice in the afterlife, then there is no basis for justice in this life.

Therefore, our inherent sense of morality and justice are plausible reasons to believe in God, since God is the foundation for law, ethics, and morality.

And notice that we don’t need to reference the Bible to make this argument.

This is because it is self-evident.

It is self-evident, because God created the universe with a moral order, and He creates us in His image.
