Genesis 6-7 Sermon “The Flood” Part 1

Genesis 6-7 “The FLOOD”

Preached at Cross of Christ Fellowship in Naperville, Illinois on 10/19/25.

Intro:
God of OT vs God of NT; Mean vs Nice; Response: Have you actually read it?
-CARSON: Same traits in OT and NT, but even more amplified (justice and grace)
-See this in the flood narrative: Judgment but also grace.
M.I: The God who shows judgment & grace in the flood, is the same God shows judgment & grace in the gospel.

  1. A TIME OF GREAT WICKEDNESS AND EVIL (6:1-6, 11)
-1,600 years after Adam’s birth, the Fall and banishment from Eden.
-Population: Likely millions, but probably BILLIONS of people on Earth (possibly large than today’s pop.)
-Humans are multiplying but there STRANGE events of (6:1-4)
-‘sons of God’ marrying ‘daughters of man’ v2-3=Fallen angels intermarrying humans
    -Result=Nephilim (also translated as giants)
-God puts a limit on human life: 120 years (general limit)
    -God’s Assessment of Human condition (5, 11)
-“wickedness of man was great in the earth…every intention of the thoughts was only evil continually”
-V 11:“Earth was corrupt in God’s sight and earth was filled with violence…corrupt…corrupted their way”
    -God’s Holy Reaction (6)

-“the LORD regretted that he man made on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart”
-Human language to describe God’s response to our sin and evil.
-God doesn’t ‘regret’ in that way we do—He already knew what would take place
-But this does describe a reality of God’s displeasure over our sin and evil.
  2. GOD’S RESPONSE TO SIN AND EVIL STATED: JUDGMENT & GRACE (6:7-6:21)
As the narrative unfolds, notice with the two themes of Judgment and Grace.
-God judges sin and sinners, but He also shows underserves grace that sins.
    JUDGMENT (6:7, 13)
-God’s foretells his decision to wipe out all life (human and animal [not fish]) on the Earth (6:7, 13, 17)
-“blot out, make and of, destroy, shall die”
-God’s righteous and just response to sin and evil.
    GOD’S SAVING GRACE (6:8-21)
-God shows grace to Noah (8)
-God’s grace is what leads to His godly life (9-10)
-A Boat (an ARK) where God’s saving grace is experienced (14-21)
-A huge boat for Noah, his family, and the animals (14-16)
-A covenant with Noah and deliverance for Noah, family, and animals (18-21)

III. FAITH AND OBEDIENCE of NOAH (6: 22-7:5)
-See the faith and obedience of Noah (6:22-7:5)
Hebrews 11:7

JUDGMENT AND GRACE DISPLAYED (7:6-end)
THE FLOOD WATERS ARRIVE (7:6-16)
-“All aboard!!!” (7:6-10)
-Rain fell and everyone was on the ark (7:11-16a)
-GOD shuts the door (7:16b)
-Another display of God’s grace.
THE FLOOD KILLS EVERYONE EXCEPT FOR THOSE ON THE ARK (7:17-24)
-Waters drown everyone and everything on the earth (7:17-23a)
-Noah and his family are saved (23b)
-Waters cover the Earth 150 days (24)

GOSPEL: CONSIDER THESE MOVEMENTS OF THE STORY WITH ME AND THE GOSPEL
1. WICKED CONDITION OF HUMANITY
2. JUDGMENT OF GOD AND GRACE OF GOD
3. FAITH AND OBEDIENCE OF A BELIEVER

  1. WICKED CONDITION OF HUMANITY

-God’s assessment on Noah’s generation is one that continues after the Flood (Gen 8:21)
    Titus 3:3
-Contrary to secular culture, we are not basically good people, but totally depraved.
-Our dog-walking, tax-paying, FMSC volunteering friends are in this condition
-We see this when we compare ourselves to JESUS
-There is something desperately wrong and crooked within.
-We, apart from Christ, are in this condition.
*QUESTIONS: How do you see the condition of humanity? Is it through a biblical lens?
-Do you recognize the sin and crookedness in your own flesh?
-Will you allow this to shape you view others and their greatest need?

    2. JUDGMENT OF GOD AND GRACE OF GOD
    A. GOD’S JUDGMENT: The Return of Christ.
-A Coming Judgment on the Wicked at the return of Christ: 2 Thess 1:5-10
-Disbelieved by the world, but will certainly arrive: 2 Peter 3:4-10
    -NOTICE:
Delay is due to God’s patience, so more will come to faith in Christ.
    *QUESTION:
Are you ready for the coming judgment of God? Are you friends ready?
-The God who judged the world with a flood will judge the world at the return of Christ.

    B. GOD’S GRACE:
-Our only hope is the saving grace of God: Titus 2:11-14
-The only way to be saved is through God’s grace shown in Jesus Christ
-See again how amazing this GRACE is!
    OBSERVE:
*The God who shows judgment & grace in the flood, is the same God shows judgment & grace in the gospel.

    3. FAITH AND OBEDIENCE OF A BELIEVER: As Noah believed and obeyed, so do we.
    Unbeliever:
Believe in Jesus and repent of your sins.
-If you believe on Christ you will be saved from the coming judgment of God (Rom 10:9-10)
-Don’t wait another day, believe today. Put your trust in Christ
Believer: Keep believing and obeying, just like Noah
-We live in a time of great wickedness and unbelief
-Keep being faithful to Jesus, keep doing what he says by power of the Holy Spirit.
-You may feel foolish or look foolish, but it is not foolish to live in light of the truth.
